Law Firm Hiring Guide: Recruit Attorneys Without Placement Fees

Build a clear legal recruiting process

The fastest way to improve legal recruiting is usually not to post the same vague opening on more websites. Define the work clearly, make the opportunity credible, and search directly for professionals whose legal background fits it.

1. Define the role before writing the posting

Identify the work the lawyer will perform, how independently the lawyer must operate, the jurisdiction and admissions required, the likely client or industry exposure, work arrangement, location, compensation range when available, and what success looks like during the first year. Separate true requirements from preferences.

Use the law firm job-description guide for a posting outline, attorney and paralegal role questions, and a final review checklist.

2. Write for the candidate you actually want

Generic language attracts generic applications. A useful legal job page should tell an attorney whether the role is litigation or transactional, what matters or transactions are typical, who the attorney works with, whether business development is expected, and whether the position is remote, hybrid or in person.

3. Search candidates instead of waiting

The best candidate may be employed and only open to the right opportunity. LHN is designed to let verified employers search eligible legal professionals directly by bar admission, practice area, professional stage, location, education, work preferences and other legal-specific criteria.

4. Make outreach worth opening

Do not send a message that says only “Are you interested in a new opportunity?” Provide the role, location, work arrangement, practice focus, employer identity where appropriate, compensation information when available, and enough context for the professional to decide whether the conversation is worth having.

5. Respect confidential candidates

A confidential professional is not an invitation to reverse-engineer identity. Use the visible qualifications to decide whether to make a legitimate opportunity request. Candidate-controlled confidentiality makes it possible to reach passive talent that might otherwise avoid an online recruiting platform entirely.

6. Build a repeatable talent pipeline

Use saved candidates and saved searches to keep track of relevant professionals over time. Keep employer information accurate and close expired jobs promptly. A trustworthy employer profile and current job inventory improve both candidate confidence and search quality.

7. Recruit geographically

Start with the office market, but do not assume every candidate must already live there. Search professionals who indicate relocation willingness, nearby states or remote/hybrid preferences. LHN’s location pages can also help your openings gain additional search visibility as the network grows.
